headaches, some reasons and solutions
By Udo Hoffmann
FOOD. You are what you eat is an old axiom but you pay for what you eat is just as true. So much of today's food is processed and contains additives and chemicals to which we may be allergic or react to. That watching what you eat provides benefits beyond good health. Take for example a major culprit known MSG, a flavor enhancer that has been known to cause violent headaches in many people. Salt, another flavor enhancer that causes high blood pressure that can lead to headaches. Lets not forget about caffeine either a wonderful substance that dilates the blood vessels and can trigger migraines from over use or withdraws symptoms. In order to reduce the risk of headaches, eat smart, eat healthy and leave the processed foods on the shelf HYDRATION. When your body suffers a major loss of moisture it causes your blood vessels to shrink, blood thickens and organs limit function or can even shut down. If it is a hot day or you are being physically active to a major degree so that you sweat a lot remember to drink more so that you can avoid dehydration. Point of note... while many sports drinks claim to contain "essential nutrients" or "electrolytes" lost due to excessive activity they are hard on some organs and can actually slow down the bodies ability to rehydrate. RHYTHM and MOVEMENT. Prolonged physical activity that calls upon muscles not normally used stresses and tightens them. Postures that are un-natural and habits that are disrupted like waking up early, sleeping in or not sleeping at night also disrupt the mental and physical balance your body has. All these things can cause headaches. If you are not used to something and your body or mind is demanded to perform them it causes the body to react in a different way. Such changes lead to the release of hormones which can stress the body even more. STRESS. We all know how bad stress is for you. A popular commercial even blames it for being a major cause of obesity! The truth is that while stress is blamed for many things it is most often the culprit of that throbbing and pounding in your head on days when everything is "just not going right". Take the time to stop and breath deeply, remember a happy moment or just give thanks for being alive. Doing so stops the body from producing certain hormones that are the causing your pain and suffering. Stress is our bodies natural method of dealing with a potential danger. The body pumps out hormones like Cortisol and Adrenalin, restricts certain organ functions and expands the blood vessels to increase blood flow, which allow us to deal with survival issues and survive. Prolonged stress states take their toll on our bodies and result in damage and pain. Sudden changes in our bodies function will also cause pain. Take the famous "Ice cream headache"... the cold from the ice cream restricts the blood flow through the vessels in the roof of our mouth by shrinking them. Once the cold is gone, the blood vessels expand again and that is the point at which we cringe in agony! So be happy, don't worry and smile. Being stress free allows you greater focus, clarity and ability making you and your day more productive. Besides, a smile is always great medicine! |
